- Chains
- Chain length can be adjusted when you fit it but the width has to be correct. 7 and 8-speed chains are the same width but 9-speed ones are narrower, with 10-speed narrower again. Choose the right one to match your gear system. You can use a SRAM (Sachs/Sedis) chain with a Shimano gear system - in fact, most people do! When you join a Shimano chain, you must use a new replacement connecting pin.

- Derailleurs FRONT
- A front derailleur needs to have the right clamp diameter to fit your frame, cable routing (top or bottom pull) and swing (top or bottom). Most Shimano MTB derailleurs have multi-fit clamps and will operate with cable pulling from top or bottom. Top swing derailleurs have the clamp below the cage, bottom swing ones have the clamp at the top. Which of these you require depends on your frame so it's best to copy the one you already have.

- Good quality gear cables will have a dramatic effect on the feel and function of your drivetrain. Fully sealed systems are particularly good for MTBs used off-road as they prevent the ingress of water and muck. They also require minimal maintenance.

- Lubricants
- The right lubricant will keep your bike working properly for much longer and save you heaps of money in the long run. You'll need a thin, dry lube for the cables and pivots of your brakes and gears. This will resist water and won't attract dirt. Chains require something heavier. In summer, a White Lightning type lube will keep them clean and protected but wetter weather means you'll need a more tenacious alternative.
