- To start with, nobody had bar ends because they hadn't been invented yet. Then everybody had them because they make it easier to climb hills and give you a few more hand positions so your arms don't hurt as much. Now, most people have gone off them because they don't look so good with riser bars. They still work, though and very well.

- Bar Tape
- Bar tape is about more than matching your frame colour. Most people find Cork tape is the most comfortable but, if your hands are still suffering, give the new style Gel tape a try. A good tip for fitting new tape: put the box on top of a radiator for a few minutes first. This makes it nice and pliable and you get a neater job.

- MTB Bar Grips
- Your three contact points with the bike - hands, feet and bum - are crucial to comfort and control. Good quality bar grips make a real difference. If you suffer from numb hands, try the new generation of ergonomically designed models. You'll probably have to cut your old ones off - be careful not to slash the bar inside. Fitting new ones is easier if you use a slippery substance that dries afterwards.
