- Bottom Brackets
- A bottom bracket has to fit both your chainset and your frame. There are currently four chainset/bottom bracket interfaces that you're likely to come across. If your chainset is made by Shimano and it has splines, then you need an Octalink bottom bracket. If your chainset is NOT made by Shimano and it has splines, it's almost certainly ISIS.

- Chain Rings
- Chainring compatibility is a nightmare! The simplest way to be sure your new ring will work with your existing system is to choose a direct replacement. Make sure it has the correct number of teeth, number of bolt holes and is compatible with your chain (8/9 or 10 speed)

- Chains
- Chain length can be adjusted when you fit it but the width has to be correct. 7 and 8-speed chains are the same width but 9-speed ones are narrower, with 10-speed narrower again. Choose the right one to match your gear system. You can use a SRAM (Sachs/Sedis) chain with a Shimano gear system - in fact, most people do! When you join a Shimano chain, you must use a new replacement connecting pin.
